How old does my student need to be to take driver education?

You must be at least 15 years old.

 

When can a student get a Learner’s Permit?

Students can get a Learner’s Permit at 15 years old if they have registered for a state approved Driver’s Educations program that includes a minimum of 30-hours of online/classroom training and 6-hours of behind-the-wheel driving instruction.

 

What do I have to take with me to the BMV to get a permit?

You will need the following items with you when you are ready to apply for your permit: -CDE form (form we issue to you when you register with us) - Social Security Card - Birth Certificate (must be an original from the health department)- 2 proofs of Residency.

 

Do I have to take a test to get a Learner's Permit?

Yes, all individuals wishing to obtain a Learner’s Permit must take a 50-question multiple choice Knowledge Exam at the BMV. This test is NOT retaken when getting a Driver’s License.  In the event that a student does not score above 80%, they may retake the Knowledge Exam the next day.  A vision screening is also required.

 

Who can I drive with once I earn my Learner's Permit?

You can only drive with your legal parent, guardian, or relative age 25 or older.  You may also drive with a state licensed driving instructor. They must be sitting in the front seat with their Driver’s License in their possession.

 

How long is my permit good for?

24 months, after 24 months from time of registration you are no longer considered a student and must re-enroll if you want to complete the program.

 

How does my student successfully complete driver education?

The student must complete the 30 hours of class, the 6 hours of driving, and have 80% or higher grade for the classroom and driving.

 

What if my student fails driver education?

If a student drops out of the program, does not complete driver education, or fails, we must contact the BMV and the BMV will revoke or invalidate the permit up notification.

 

When can my child get a license?

Any student who completes the FULL course may get their license at 16 and 90 days. However, they must have also held their permit for 180 days. Both requirements must be met to obtain a license. Without driver education you must hold the permit for 180 days and be at least 16 and 270 days.

 

Do you give the Driving skills test?
Students also have the opportunity to take their driving skills test with one of our instructors once they have completed phase 1 & 2. There is a $40 fee for the skills test. If you would like to take this test with one of our instructors, this needs to be scheduled in advance. This test is taken using one of our driver education cars. If you decide not to take the skills test with us you can take the test for free at the BMV, it would be in your own car, and you would need to schedule your test directly with the BMV. 

What car is used to complete the drives?
All drives will be completed using our vehicles. Our vehicles are fully insured and have a dual control brake system.

Does having my student take Driver’s Ed help with my auto insurance premium?

Most automotive insurance companies offer discounts for taking Driver’s Education. You will need to check your policy with your insurance agent. According to Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance they offer for eligible vehicle types, a Driver Education Discount for drivers up to age 21 who complete a state-approved driver education course. If a young driver on the policy has completed a state-approved driver education course and provides signed evidence of successful course completion, he or she may be eligible for a 15% discount which applies to most coverage under that policy.
