On April 23, 2012, the Whitewater Adult Literacy Coalition held its annual Spelling Bee. Four teams participated in the annual event to raise funds for The Link's Adult Literacy program. All monies collected go toward the purchase of materials used by literacy tutors to assist adults with reading skills.

WALC Coordinator, Patsy Brack, welcomed all teams and guests before the Bee began. She also presented the awards at the end of the Bee.

Participating Teams:

  1. Psi Iota Xi: Kathy Stuedle (coach), Dr Joanne Guttman, Katie Guttman, Valerie Collings

  2. Union Savings & Loan: Jamie Jobe (coach), Amy Hammons, Kristin Lawson, Madison Fain

  3. Connersville Middle School: Victoria Smejkal (coach), Cindy Roberts, Jalana Herron, Kim Sherck

  4. Bath State Bank: Sharon Frank (coach), Melanie Watterson, Ann Haas, Amanda Ashworth

Word Pronouncer Vicki Taylor began the practice round shortly after the Spelling Bee rules were explained. During practice, misspelled words are not counted. After each team has a chance to spell one word, the competition begins.

First team to fall was Bath State Bank with the misspelled WICKIUP (an American Indian hut made of brushwood or covered with mats).
The next team to exit the competition was Connersville Middle School when one member misspelled WHISTLEABLE (capable of being whistled).

The final 2 teams, Union Savings & Loan and Psi Iota Xi continued until Union Savings missed ACCENTUATE (to give emphasis or prominence to). Psi Iota Xi captured this year's title with the correct spelling of ACCRETIONARY (marked by or involving addition or accumulation).

We wish to thank Peggy Hollingsworth and Morford Restaurant II, Inc. (a.k.a. Pizza King) for their individual contributions to the Whitewater Adult Literacy Coalition fund. A special thank you to the Whitewater Technical Career Center for allowing us use of the Student Auditorium for this year's Bee.

The Whitewater Adult Literacy Coalition (WALC) sponsors 2 events each year to raise funds. All proceeds go toward the purchase of materials to help area adults learn how to read.

The Annual WALC Spelling Bee takes place during the spring of each year in the WTCC Student Auditorium. Cost per team is $100. Each team consists of 4 members ~ 3 spellers and 1 team captain.

The WALC hopes to sponsor a new fund raiser in the near future: Triva Quest. Each team ~ 3 members and 1 team captain ~ will test their knowledge of Connersville, Fayette and neighboring county facts, as well as facts about Indiana, including sports, famous Hoosiers, and Indiana parks, recreations, and attractions. Cost per team is $100. Trivia Quest will take place in the WTCC Student Auditorium.

By sponsoring a team for either event, or for both events, you can help the WALC purchase teaching materials. By helping, you can help an area adult learn how to read.
